1 Thessalonians 5:6
“So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.”
It is easy to move through life spiritually asleep. Spiritual sleep does not announce itself with closed eyes; it sneaks in as apathy, distraction, and a quiet drifting with the currents of the world around us. We get caught up in daily demands, anxieties, and fleeting pleasures, slowly dulling our awareness of God’s presence and His eternal purpose for our lives.
Paul’s message to the Thessalonians is an urgent wake-up call: stay awake, and remain sober-minded. To be awake means to live with clear vision, recognizing that our time here matters and that Christ’s return is daily approaching. To be sober means guarding your heart and mind from anything that intoxicates your judgment—whether that is pride, fear, or worldly compromise.
Living awake does not mean living in nervous anxiety; it denotes living with deliberate purpose. Examine your heart today, and honestly assess any areas where your spiritual indifference may have quietly taken root. Fix your thoughts in prayer, align your steps with God’s truth, and choose to walk in the light of His grace, fully attentive, and fully sensitive to where His Holy Spirit is leading you.
BRANCHING OUT:
If we claim to belong to the light, why are we so comfortable living in the dark?
