September 19, 2026 PRACTICING SELF-CONTROL

Proverbs 25:28

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

In ancient times, a city’s walls were not an optional luxury; they were its identity, sanctuary, and defense. A City wall kept out invaders, bandits, and wild animals. A city without walls had no filter. Whatever wandered by could march straight in and ruin all that lies within.

Proverbs paints this striking imagery not to condemn, but to illuminate, to show us the true nature of self-control. This image of self-control is far from being a burden, however, it serves as a vital safeguard for our spiritual growth and godly living. Self-control is your spiritual and emotional wall.

When your wall is broken, every passing provocation, impulsive desire, or flash of anger has free access to your life. A harsh word from a colleague shatters your inner peace. An unfiltered thought becomes a destructive habit. You find yourself constantly reacting rather than living by the Holy Spirit.

Rebuilding a wall takes time, brick by single brick. It begins with the sacred pause: choosing not to respond in anger, choosing to step away from temptation, and inviting God’s Spirit to govern your inner life. Guard your heart today. Let patience, prayer, and discipline fortify your perimeter so that peace remains secure within.

                                                                                                                                               SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

If you wouldn’t leave the front door of your home wide open to every passing thief, why leave your mind and emotions completely undefended against every passing impulse?
