Luke 5:16
But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.
The context of this verse is striking. Just one verse earlier, the crowds were surging. News of Jesus had spread, people were pressing in to hear Him preach, and the sick were waiting to be healed. From a contemporary perspective on productivity or ministry, this presented the ultimate opportunity for Jesus to focus on ministerial progress. Instead, Jesus pulled back.
He understood what we so easily forget: activity is not a substitute for intimacy. Jesus did not wait until His schedule was empty to commune with the Father, nor did He wait for the needs of the world to stop pressing in. If He had, He never would have prayed. Instead, His withdrawal was intentional and habitual—He often chose the quiet time, being alone with the Father over the noise of the crowd.
Our culture treats exhaustion like a badge of honor and stillness like a waste of time. We convince ourselves that once the inbox clears, the errands finish, and the demands pause, we will finally sit with God. True peace, however, is seldom attained by completing every task; rather, it comes from intentionally turning toward the true source of our strength. (God!)
